Mosquito Lagoon-New Smyrna Beach 2017 Year End Report
Great Fishing To Finish Out a Great Year!
Another year has past and I couldn’t be more greatful for all of you that continue you to support me as returning clients and those new friendships that were made this year as well. During the fall season the winds were light and the air temps were warm keeping plenty of juvenile tarpon and snook very active throughout the Mosquito Lagoon, India River Lagoon, and New Smyrna Beach Backcountry. Both the tarpon and the snook were staging in areas following the out flows of fresh water from Hurricane Irma and other recent rain storms. Surface and subsurface flies resembling shrimp or small mullet received most of the attention but honestly its hard to beat a good surface bite so most days we stuck with flies on the top.
Following Hurricane Irma it became a bit tough getting on a pattern with redfish. Prior to the storm the fish were settled due to consist weather coming out of the summer season and we had plenty of fish throughout the lagoons holding in specific zones until Irma stirred the pot. The water levels finally started to drop and with a few cool fronts moving through it pushed the redfish back into the shallows and feeding aggressively. The fall fishing here can some of the best all and tends to be our slower season and allows me to get out and do a little fishing myself and with good friends.
Big redfish are always around in the Fall as well in Ponce Inlet through the Intercoastal Waterway and through the Lagoons in the deeper zones. Didn’t get to fish in Ponce Inlet this fall due to the high surf and wind most days but did manage to hide from the wind in the Lagoon to get a few for spin clients.
As the Winter season approached the redfish and seatrout were starting to make their adjustments to move out of the super shallow water to the edges of the flats and into the 1ft-3ft range. Seatrout could be found in groups in the deeper sad holes and around schools of large mullet during their spawn Nov-Dec.
Some of the days the redfish were giving us the shots and other days they were no where to be found. This is typical as they make the transition into their Winter time patterns. Plenty of black drum schools around early this year as well which means it will only get better between Jan-Mar. Outside of the mild cold fronts in late December the snook fishing was heating up and stayed strong through the end of the year prior to the major cold front we just experienced in the first week of 2018. And when I say the snook fishing was good it was really “GOOD” and even lost count some days. Here’s a few nice snook were caught in the last days of 2017.
Looking forward to all the adventures to be had in 2018 with all my regular clients and new. Happy New Year to you all and hope to see you soon.
